Claude AI for Australian Modern Slavery Statements
The Modern Slavery Statement is an annual board-signed disclosure under the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth). Seven mandatory criteria, supply-chain mapping narrative, risk assessment, due diligence actions, effectiveness assessment, training description, consultation. Claude does 50 to 70 percent of the drafting while the procurement, sustainability, GC, and board retain every supply-chain assertion and remediation decision.
We have rolled Claude into Australian Modern Slavery Statement cycles for ASX listed reporting entities, large NFPs, universities, and pre-IPO entities anticipating reporting threshold breaches.
Realistic ROI
Why Claude Specifically (Not Just Any AI)
Four properties of Claude make the difference between "tried it once" and "embedded into how the function works".
1M context: Act + AGD guidance + prior statements + supply-chain in one prompt
Claude Opus 4.7 holds up to 1 million tokens. Load the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth), AGD guidance, prior statements (yours + sector peers), supply-chain mapping output, risk assessment output, due-diligence actions, training records, consultation evidence.
Conservative posture: refuses to claim due diligence not done
Modern Slavery Statements carry AGD-register publication, board sign-off, and reputation risk. Claude flags "this claims action that has not been evidenced". For the cycle, that posture is the feature.
Excellent at structured criterion-by-criterion writing in AGD-aligned tone
The seven mandatory criteria are well-defined. Claude is the strongest general model for the structured criterion-by-criterion writing the statement demands.
Projects: Act + AGD guidance + prior statements + supply-chain + due diligence pinned
Claude Projects holds the Act, AGD guidance, prior statements, supply-chain mapping, risk assessment, due-diligence actions, training records, consultation evidence.
The Modern Slavery Statement Cycle with Claude Embedded
Each of the seven mandatory criteria has a clear Claude role.
Criterion 1: Reporting Entity
Drafts the reporting entity description from corporate records and prior statement. CompSec verifies.
Criterion 2: Structure + Supply Chain
Drafts the structure and supply-chain narrative from corporate structure and supply-chain mapping output. Procurement verifies.
Criterion 3: Risks
Drafts the risk assessment narrative from the risk assessment output, sector benchmarks, geography risk profiles, prior risk narrative.
Criterion 4: Actions
Drafts the actions narrative from due-diligence framework, supplier engagement records, audit results, remediation actions.
Criterion 5: Effectiveness
Drafts the effectiveness assessment narrative from KPI data, action outcomes, prior effectiveness narrative.
Criterion 6 + 7: Consultation + Other
Drafts the consultation narrative (with controlled entities) and the "other relevant" narrative. Board signs.
Eight High-Leverage Modern Slavery Use Cases
| Task | Traditional | With Claude | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Modern Slavery Statement (single entity) | 120 to 250 hours per cycle | 30 to 60 hours total | Claude drafts each criterion from data, prior, sector benchmarks. Procurement, sustainability, GC verify; board signs. |
| Joint statement (parent + controlled entities) | 200 to 400 hours per cycle | 50 to 100 hours total | Claude drafts entity-by-entity sections + joint sections. Consultation narrative drafted from real evidence. Each board signs. |
| Supply-chain risk narrative (per high-risk tier) | 20 to 40 hours per tier | 4 to 8 hours | Claude drafts narrative from risk assessment output, sector benchmarks, geography profiles. Procurement and sustainability verify. |
| Supplier engagement letter / questionnaire | 4 to 8 hours per supplier set | 60 to 90 min | Claude drafts from supplier framework, sustainability strategy, prior questionnaires. Procurement finalises. |
| Remediation action narrative | 8 to 16 hours per material remediation | 90 min to 2 hours | Claude drafts from remediation case file, framework, prior narrative. Sustainability, GC, procurement verify. |
| Board paper supporting statement sign-off | 8 to 16 hours per cycle | 2 to 3 hours | Claude drafts board paper from statement, key risks, action progress, effectiveness. CompSec, GC, board sign. |
| Training narrative + training material refresh | 20 to 40 hours per cycle | 5 to 8 hours | Claude drafts training narrative + material from prior training, framework, sector best practice. L&D and procurement finalise. |
| AGD register entry + publication pack | 4 to 8 hours per cycle | 60 to 90 min | Claude drafts AGD entry + accompanying pack. CompSec verifies; published per AGD timeline. |
Six Modern Slavery Statement Discipline Notes
Board signs the statement, accountability preserved
The Modern Slavery Statement requires board sign-off. The board retains accountability for the assertions. Claude drafts; the board and named accountable officers (typically CEO, CFO, Chair) sign. Pin in the Project explicitly.
Cannot claim action not evidenced
Statements that claim due-diligence action not actually taken risk AGD scrutiny and reputation damage. Claude flags claims that need evidence; procurement and sustainability verify every action narrative against the evidence.
Supply-chain mapping evidence is owned by procurement
Claude drafts the supply-chain narrative from the mapping output procurement produces. The mapping itself, and its accuracy, is owned by procurement. The drafting layer reports the mapping; it does not generate the mapping.
Consultation with controlled entities documented
Criterion 6 requires consultation with controlled entities. The consultation evidence (records of consultation, sign-off from each entity) is the basis for the narrative. Claude drafts the narrative from the evidence; the consultation itself is the procurement / GC / CompSec workflow.
AGD register publication discipline preserved
Published statements are publicly available on the AGD register. The publication timeline and the AGD requirements are unchanged. Claude drafts the publication pack; CompSec or GC publishes per AGD timeline.
Remediation actions are people work
Where the statement describes remediation actions for identified concerns, the actions themselves are owned by procurement, sustainability, and where relevant GC. Claude drafts the narrative around the actions; the actions are the operational work.
How Yes AI Helps With Modern Slavery Statements
Modern Slavery Project setup
We load the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth), AGD guidance, prior statements (yours + sector peers), supply-chain mapping output, risk assessment output, due-diligence framework, training records, consultation evidence, and house voice into a restricted Enterprise Project.
Modern Slavery prompt library
The 10 to 15 prompts the cycle runs: each of the seven criteria, supply-chain risk narrative, supplier engagement, remediation narrative, board paper, training narrative, AGD pack. Saved in the Project library.
Cycle working session (full day)
Full-day session with procurement lead, sustainability lead, GC, CompSec. We run real current cycle work through Claude. Outputs become 10 to 15 saved prompts.
Annual review + board brief
Annual (60 min) pre-cycle with the cycle lead. Refresh Act + AGD guidance Project, retire stale prompts, brief on new features. Annual paper to board on the AI approach.
Our 5-Step Modern Slavery Rollout
Most reporting entities complete the setup in 30 to 45 days, before the annual statement cycle starts.
Discovery with procurement + sustainability + GC + CompSec
Half-day session. Map the cycle, the supply-chain mapping process, the risk assessment, the due-diligence actions, the board sign-off chain. Agree engagement scope.
